Reflecting on the Past and Looking Ahead: Questions and Thoughts for a Graduation Commencement Speech

It’s Graduation Season! As many of you have had this year, we too have had a graduate in our lives - our daughter graduated with her BS in Communication/Public Relations. We sat through the ceremony, festivities and watched as the graduates happily celebrated this major milestone in their lives; thankfully the graduation speeches were short and sweet- HA!

I’m sure we can all remember graduation speeches that were long and boring. One in particular sticks with me where the one giving the speech made it all about themselves, not all the graduates, it wasn’t inspiring.

Of the best speeches I heard and saw, although I wasn’t in attendance, was the one by US Navy Admiral, William H. McRaven. He outlined the importance of doing the little things like making your bed, embracing the fears of life, taking risks, facing bullying, respecting others, and changing the world for generations to come.

That started me thinking about all of us at this moment in our lives - what if we were chosen to write a graduation speech that covered the past few years of our lives and business? What would we write about, what moments would we wish to remember and what focus for the future would we leave the room with?

Here are some thoughts to consider:

1. What have been the defining moments in my business and life over the past few years?

Reflecting on the pivotal moments that have shaped our journey can provide valuable insights into the lessons learned, challenges overcome, and successes achieved! When we share these experiences with my family, friends and colleagues, we offer a glimpse into the transformative power of perseverance and resilience. What are the moments you would share?

2. How have I grown and evolved through adversity and setbacks?

Adversity is a natural part of life, and navigating through challenges can lead to profound personal and professional growth. By sharing stories of resilience and adaptability, we can illustrate the importance of embracing setbacks as opportunities for learning and development. And we have so many stories to share in the past 4 years and ways we’ve grown, remember the pandemic?

3. What role have relationships and community played in my success?

Building strong relationships and fostering a supportive community have been instrumental in my own journey! By emphasizing the value of collaboration, mentorship, coaching and connection, we can encourage the room to cultivate meaningful relationships that will sustain them through the ups and downs of life and business. Life was not meant to be done alone - who is in your tribe and has had a profound affect on your life lately?

4. What are my hopes and aspirations for the future?

Looking ahead, it’s essential to set ambitious goals, dream BIG, and envision a future filled with purpose and passion. What are your own aspirations and vision for the future? What would you say to inspire those listening to pursue their dreams with courage, determination, and unwavering commitment?

5. How can I encourage my audience to embrace uncertainty and change?

In a rapidly evolving world, adaptability and openness to change are essential qualities for success. College graduates usually have 1 major goal - GET A JOB and the job search can be filled with uncertainty, right? How have you embraced uncertainty and change? What ways have you succeeded and you’re really proud of? What ways would you like to grow in? By encouraging your audience to embrace uncertainty with courage and resilience, you can empower them to navigate the unknown with confidence and optimism.

I would love to hear your graduation speech! Our shared experiences, the stories, the lessons learned are exactly what is needed in our world RIGHT NOW. A message of resiliency, how you’ve overcome adversity and are using it for your growth, your hopes and dreams of the future will inspire all who listen. May YOUR speech be a beacon of light, hope, and empowerment for all who hear it. And, Make Your Bed - read the book, it will leave you inspired for years to come!
